BNURS 501 Philosophical and Theoretical Foundations of Advanced Practice Nursing (3)
Explores the multiple philosophical and theoretical perspectives that guide nursing practice. Historical and emerging theories of nursing are analyzed in relationship to a variety of practice settings and health care concerns. This course is the beginning core course for the Masters in Nursing curriculum. Students will learn the philosophical and theoretical basis for professional nursing practice at an advanced level. Students will explore personal and professional values/philosophies that guide practice and how these values/philosophies fit with established and emerging theory in Nursing. As the initial course in the Masters curriculum, the material in this course is integral to the rest of the curriculum and addresses student skill development critical thinking, abstract thought processes, and written and oral communication. The content of this course provides a foundation for the understanding, analysis and application of a variety of theories that affect advanced nursing practice in the Nursing practice.
BNURS 503 Advanced Fieldwork ([1-12]-, max. 12)
Fulfills the requirements of the non-thesis option for Master's students in nursing. Projects involve scholarly inquiry with in-depth focused analysis, culminating in a written product/report for dissemination. This course provides students with substantive fieldwork experience in their setting (s) of interest. Assists students in the delineation of advanced nursing roles and application of theoretical concepts into the real-world context. Prerequisites: BNURS 501, 504, 525/527, 520, 526, 527 and may be concurrent with BNURS 507 and 508
BNURS 504 Disparity and Social Justice in Health Care (3)
Analyzes how social, cultural, economic and political factors relate to the nature, distribution, and meaning of health and illness. Critically examines the concepts of oppression, privilege, and social justice as they relate to health disparities, discrimination in the health care interaction, and inequities in the health care labor force.
BNURS 507 Advanced Nursing Roles (2)
Examine the wide variety of roles available to the graduate-level nurse, including various roles in clinical practice and education.
BNURS 508 Ethics, Aesthetics (3)
Examine, critique, and apply theories, models, and methods associated with the fields of ethics and aesthetics in advanced nursing roles.
BNURS 511 Curriculum Development in Nursing Education (3)
Theoretical rationale for curriculum development and study of curricular problems in nursing. All students taking the course will complete an instructional package for a specific population incorporating the principles of curriculum design presented in class and in the literature.
BNURS 512 Evaluation of Clinical Performance in Nursing (3)
Course is designed for individuals preparing for or currently teaching in schools of nursing or nursing service positions emphasis on theory and principles of evaluation. Students may develop or critique systems/instruments to appraise clinical nursing performance as part of course requirements.
B NURS 513 Theories and Methods of Teaching and Learning (3)
Addresses theories and methods of teaching and learning, tools and resources, role development, and current issues faced by those who teach in higher education and staff development. Includes practice and evaluation of strategies.
BNURS 520 Scholarly Inquiry for Nursing Practice I (3)
Research process as it applies to nursing. Use of the literature in building theoretical rationale. Selection of appropriate methods. Presentation of findings. Minimum of two laboratory hours weekly. This is the first of a two-quarter sequence of examination of research methods in nursing and describing methodologies used in developing a master's project with relevance to nursing science. These courses provide the foundation for critically evaluating nursing and other research for application to practice. Prerequisite: a course in statistics.
BNURS 521 Scholarly Inquiry for Nursing Practice II (3)
Research process as it applies to nursing. Use of the literature in building theoretical rationale. Selection of appropriate methods. Presentation of findings. Prerequisite: B NURS 520.
BNURS 525 Leadership for Advanced Nursing Roles (3)
This course focuses on personal and professional development for leadership in advanced nursing roles in health care delivery, clinical research and educational settings. Curricular emphasis is on the application of systems theory/thinking, leadership theory, critical thinking and the use of argument to enact advanced nursing leadership roles that will contribute to improvements in the design and operation of health care and related systems and the health of populations.
BNURS 526 Program Planning & Evaluation (3)
Analysis of selected theories and methods of program planning and program evaluation in the design, organization, and development of health services for defined populations in the community. Selected theoretical and research models are reviewed for their use in the conceptualization and development of health programs and services for defined populations. The impact of interventions on target problems is also evaluated. The role of the master's prepared nurse and selected other professionals is analyzed in the conceptualization, implementation and evaluation of program interventions.
BNURS 527 Managing Effective Access and Utilization Within Care Systems (includes Leadership) (3)
In-depth inquiry into health care access and resource utilization patterns among diverse populations, with emphasis on nursing management strategies for establishing effective population-system fit.
BNURS 580 Populations at Risk in the Community (3)
Focuses on health needs and risks of selected populations in the community and theoretical and analytical perspectives on assessment and intervention strategies in community health nursing practice with groups and populations whose health is at risk.
B NURS 598 Special Projects (1-6, max. 12)
Scholarly inquiry with in-depth, focused analysis, culminating in a written product/report for dissemination.
B NURS 600 Independent Graduate Project/Research (1-5, max. 15)
Provides graduate nursing students an opportunity to investigate and report on selected nursing problems under the supervision of a graduate faculty member. Credit/no credit only.
