Scholarly Interests:

Dr. Sikma's research is focused on environments that promote healthy aging and support self-determination of older adults.  Her past gerontologic research has focused on developing caring environments for long-term care workers and her evaluation research has been influential in long-term-care policy in Washington State.  Her scholarship in teaching focuses on creative pedagogical approaches for the development of gerontologic competencies in health professionals and assistive personnel as well as the application of innovative practice models in community-based residential settings.  She is interested in supporting students from diverse backgrounds in moving through nursing career pathways.

Medication Management in Rural Assisted Living (A multi-state study)
Student and Faculty Perceptions of an Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) program for English as a Second Language (ESL) students in nursing career training. (A collaborative study with Renton Technical College faculty)
