General Information
Course reserves is a service provided by the UWB/CCC Campus
Library to support UW Bothell and Cascadia Community College courses. Course
reserves are designed to provide a high level of access to materials that are in
demand by a large number of students. Materials are taken from the open stacks, placed in the
open or closed reserves areas on the first floor of the Campus Library and given short loan periods to
maximize access to materials. Reserve fines are set at a high level to motivate
borrowers to return material on time for use by other patrons. Some materials
can also be placed on electronic reserves (e-reserves) which can be accessed
full-text via the World Wide Web.
Course reserve materials may include:
- Books owned by the UW Libraries
- Instructors' personal copies of books
- Photocopies of book chapters, journal articles, lecture notes, homework
assignments, problem solutions, test files and syllabi
- Student papers (written permission must be obtained by the faculty before
submitting papers for reserve)
- Links to course-related Web sites
Copyright and workload issues determine what materials may be placed on
reserve.
Reserves Deadline
There is no deadline for submitting materials for reserve.
All materials will be processed in the order they are received and may take more
than one week to process during busy periods. Every
effort will be made to process items for reserve by the time they will be needed
for class; however, we cannot guarantee same day or 24 hour service on last
minute requests.
Copyright Compliance
Copyright permissions for items that do not fall under Fair Use must be
obtained by the instructor before they are placed on reserve. For information regarding
copyright and Fair Use, please see Copyright and
Reserves and Copyright Information for Educators
How to Submit Reprints for Electronic Reserves
Electronic reserves are made available by the Campus Library through ERes, a
Web-based reserves system. Electronic reserves are produced by scanning or converting print material
provided by the instructor into PDF (portable document format), which can only be opened with Adobe Acrobat
Reader (version 4.0 or better is recommended to ensure stability when printing). Most campus terminals have this
application. If you need it for your home or work computer, you can download Adobe Acrobat Reader for
free.
Instructors are responsible for monitoring the quality of the photocopies
submitted to the Campus Library. Documents lose some quality when
converted to PDF so it is best to provide the highest quality photocopies
possible. Reserves staff will not photocopy readings for faculty.
In an effort to save paper and faculty time, we also offer direct scanning
from books. You may submit your personal or library books for scanning to
the reserves staff in the Materials Processing Office, LB1-311.
If you are
submitting photocopies, please follow these guidelines:
-
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act requires that
copies reproduced must contain the real notice of copyright if the
copyright owner included it on the work.
Please include the copyright notice with book excerpts and journal
articles.
- Submit clear, legible photocopies with as little "black area" as possible.
- Provide photocopies on 8 1/2 x 11 white paper;
double-sided copies OK.
- PDF, HTML, Word, Excel or other files in electronic format may be submitted as email attachments
or on disks.
- We will not scan and place copies of entire books (including
out-of-print materials) on ERes. If you have received permission to
photocopy an entire out-of-print book from the copyright owner and want to
place it on reserve, please speak with the reserves staff.
- Student papers or projects must be submitted with written permission
from the
student.
After scanning, photocopies are kept in the
Materials Processing Office until the end of the quarter. Photocopies will
not be placed on hard copy reserve unless requested.
Due to increased activity in reserves, we will no longer process materials
for UWS and UWT courses. Please contact the appropriate reserves unit.
If you would like someone from the Campus Library to provide a
demonstration of the electronic reserve system to your class, please contact
your librarian.
How to Place Books and CD-ROMs on Reserve
If you are planning to place copies of your required and
optional textbooks on
reserve in the Campus Library, please provide your textbook list to the reserves
staff as soon
as you place your orders with the Book Store. Please submit your
textbook list by email, phone,
or mail. New textbooks are rush ordered for
reserve but depending on
availability, it may take a few weeks to several months to receive cataloged
copies for the Library.
Most reserve materials may have loan periods of 2
hours, 4 hours, 24 hours, 72 hours, or 168 hours. Textbooks
are placed on 72-hour reserve unless otherwise specified by the instructor.
Reserves staff may assign shorter loan periods to materials in high demand.
Books ordered for reserve are often accompanied by a CD-ROM
supplement. Please indicate whether you would like the CD-ROM placed on reserve
and whether you would like student access to the CD-ROM from library
workstations. Please note that installation on library workstations requires
advance notice. If you have any questions regarding library access to CD-ROMs,
please contact Rob Estes at 425-352-5242 or
libhelp@uwb.edu.
Most books owned by the UW Libraries may be placed on reserve. Please submit your
supplemental book list by email, phone,
or mail. Books not owned by the UW Libraries may be ordered through the
appropriate subject librarian.
Instructors may place personal copies of books on reserve at the owner's
risk. Unless otherwise requested, personal copies will be available for
pick up in the Materials Processing Office at the end of the quarter.
Media
Media materials owned by the UW Libraries may be placed on reserve through
the Campus Media Center (CMC).
Please contact CMC at 425.352.5312 for additional information.
