Wireless Network Connection Configuration: Windows XP

Basic Steps for Configuration: Internal Wireless Card
If your laptop came with an internal built in wireless card, the drivers should already be installed. Test to see if your connection works.
Basic Steps for Configuration: External Wireless Card
Make sure that your wireless network card is 802.11b hardware or 802.11b-compatible hardware. If you have questions about this, see Where and how do I get the proper wireless hardware?
- Insert your external wireless card. Windows XP will most likely automatically detect your wireless network card and install the software. If not, follow the vendor's instructions for installing the wireless network card, which is usually just to plug in the card and run an installer program to add software for it.
- To see if Windows XP configured your laptop correctly, position your laptop where wireless is available, which currently all of the floors of the UW Bothell library buildings (LB1, LB2, and LBA).
- Insert the network wireless card, if it is not already inserted.
- Start your computer.
- Open a browser like Internet Explorer or Mozilla, and go to www.uwb.edu. You now have access to any UW and Cascadia Community College resources available to you, including e-mail and file servers.
Having problems connecting? Check the following settings
- Click My Network Places, located on your desktop.
- In the "My Computer" window, on the left hand side, click My Network Places.
- In the "My Network Places" windows, click the View Network Connections link, located under the "Network Tasks" section.
- In the "Network Connections" window, under "Lan or High Speed Internet", right click on the Wireless Network Connection icon, and choose Properties.
- Click the Wireless Networks tab. Make sure the "Use Windows to Configure my Wireless Network Settings" box is checked. Under the "Preferred Networks" double click UWB-CCC.
- In the "Wireless Network Connection" window, place a check next to "Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network, even though it is not secure".
