Fetch
Fetch is the software used for file transfer (FTP) on the Macintosh. It also has built in Kerberos support, which enables access to the secure servers in Seattle. Fetch has a practical, user-friendly interface, so connecting and using the program should be fairly straightforward.
Connect
- Launch Fetch by clicking on the little fellow with the blue disk in his mouth. A "New Connection" window will pop up asking for the Host, User ID, and Security.
- The Host is the FTP server's address
- The User ID is your username
- Security should be set to GSS for UW servers
- Encrypt session should be checked
- If you use Homer, Aagaard, or Dante, you can click on the arrows next to Shortcuts
and select the appropriate option from the list that appears. Doing so basically inserts the server name and sets the security to GSS, so you just have to enter your username. - Click OK (or hit enter) when you've finished entering the information.
Authenticate
- After connecting, a "Kerberos for Macintosh" window will paste across your screen. Kerberos is an authentication protocol used with most Seattle servers.
- The Username is your username (for the second time)
- The Realm should be left on the default u.washington.edu
- The Password is your password.
- Click OK when you've finished.
Navigating
The main window displays the files located in your current working directory. These are organized by name, but can be organized by date or size by clicking on the appropriate header button.
Double-click on a folder to change directories.
To move back up a directory, click on where the current directory name is displayed:
Downloading Files
- Select the file you want to download (by clicking on it once).
- Click on the Get File... button:
- A Save dialog box will prompt you for the location to save the selected file. The default directory is the Desktop.
- Click on Save to download the file!
Uploading Files
- Click on the Put Files... button:
- An Open dialog box will prompt you for the location of the file(s) you want to upload.
- Double-click on the file name.
- Now the Put File dialog box will ask what name the file being uploaded should have on the server. The default, of course, is the original file name.
- Click OK.
Drag And Drop
Dragging and dropping is an alternate (and certainly easier) way to transfer files with Fetch. This works in exactly the same way as dragging files to and from a disk. To do so, simply make sure that Fetch and the folder on your computer are both visible on the screen.
Click on the file and, while holding the mouse button down, "drag" it to the destination. This will work when dragging files to Fetch and to your computer (from Fetch).
The Status Panel
The Status Panel is the divided section on the right side of the Fetch window.
- Status contains the details of your current connection, including the encryption being used (if any).
- File gives the name, type, and size of the file that is being transferred (or was last transferred).
- Transfer shows the download speed in bytes per second.
Mode/Format
These should both be set for Automatic unless a special circumstance or need has arisen.
