Kenyon S. Chan, Ph.D., began his tenure as Chancellor of the University of Washington Bothell in July 2007.
Prior to this appointment, Chan was Dean of the College and Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Occidental College. While at Occidental he had the distinction of serving as Interim President for an academic year during a time of institutional transition. Among his many accomplishments as Interim President, Chan raised a record sum of over $21.1 million, worked to strengthen trustee and alumni relations, restructured and renovated the student affairs division and student government, and initiated campus climate and diversity renewal strategies to improve relationships among students, faculty, staff, and administration.
His previous administrative positions include: Dean of Bellarmine College at Loyola Marymount University, Director of the Liberal Studies Program, and Founding Chair of the Asian American Studies Department at California State University, Northridge.
In addition to his vast administrative experience, Chan has over 35 years of academic experience as a faculty member at Occidental College, Loyola Marymount University, California State University, Northridge and the University of California, Los Angeles. With a primary research interest on the effects of race on the emotional development of children and the sociocultural factors that influence motivation, learning, and schooling, his contributions to the academic community have been great, resulting in 26 publications and 32 professional/conference presentations to his credit.
Chan is a three time graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, with a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology (Special Education), an MA in Special Education and a BA in Sociology.
