The Master of Science degree proposed by the Computing and Software Systems Program is unique in that it is designed both for career transition students and those already educated in a computer-related area. Many of our students will be distinguished by already having a specialization in some application domain, such as the biological and medical sciences, aerospace, finance, or even the humanities. By completing our program they will learn how to apply computing and software systems methods, tools and concepts in their chosen domain of specialization. This makes them well suited for jobs in many different types of industries, not just companies specializing in software development. The program also offers students with undergraduate degrees in computer science or in CSS the opportunity to obtain increased depth in some of the areas they previously studied.
Data obtained from the Washington Competitiveness Council, the Puget Sound Regional Council, the Washington State Employment Security, the Washington Software Alliance, among other sources, indicate that graduates with an MS in CSS will find regional employment opportunities in not only the software/internet and technology sectors, but in many other sectors of the economy. Studies conducted at UWB show strong regional employer demand for the skills, abilities and fields of knowledge offered by this MS in CSS program.
To facilitate students coming from a wide range of backgrounds, three background courses will be offered that allow students to obtain the course work required to be successful in the program. The core courses in the program are divided into four groups that focus on: problem solving and analytical thinking skills; oral and written communication skills and teamwork skills; self-directed learning skills; and essential technical skills. Each student will be required to do a thesis/project. The 45-credit program can be completed in five quarters, or six quarters if all three background courses are required.
The Master of Science in Computing and Software Systems degree program has been approved by the University of Washington and by the Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board. The CSS Program is actively seeking resources with the goal of offering the masters degree soon.
Further information, including admission criteria and application information will be posted online once it is available.
